This Friday, March 13, the Docklands Sinfonia holds its first concert since its formation in January 2009. Conducted and founded by Spencer Down it promises to be a 'major cultural force in London's Docklands'.
The show will feature stars such as saxophonist Christian Forshaw and soprano Elin Manahan Thomas in the orchestra's first-ever concert to be held at St. Anne's Church in Limehouse at 7.30pm on Friday, March 13, 2009.
Tickets are currently being sold online and by phone and they cost £10 and £6 (concs).

Thoroughly enjoyed this concert – not sure it should really fall under the ‘amateur’ orchestra category when I compare it to some of the other amateur orchestras I’ve seen recently..! There was a real feeling of occasion to the evening and the orchestra was conducted with real passion and style by up and coming conductor Spencer Down. The first half consisted of two world premieres by Andrew Keenan and Christian Forshaw. These were both interesting and exciting pieces with Forshaw displaying some virtuosic playing on the saxophone. The orchestra got to show what they could really do in the second half with a romp through Tchaikovsky’s 5th symphony. This was an exciting performance with each section holding their own and showing that they have much potential.
In short it was a great concert – a youthful orchestra with a passionate conductor and I will be very interested to see where they go from here.

I was also fortunate enough to be at the Dockland Sinfonia's debut concert... and was blown away!
I couldn't believe that this was a non-professional group which had only held its first rehearsal ten weeks before.
I thoroughly enjoyed Andrew Keenan's 'Machination 1', which contained some very difficult rythms which the orchestra navigated with great ease.
Christian Forshaw's 'Sanctuary Suite' was stunning and he was accompanied beautifully by the soprano Elin Manahan Thomas.
The two world premieres in the first half were complimented by Tchaikovsky's rousing symphony No 5.
The Docklands Sinfonia, under the baton of exciting young conductor Spencer Down, really let rip. Their energy and passion were spellbinding.
The audience rightly rewarded this fantastic orchestra with a five minute standing ovation.
What an achievement! well done to all involved. It felt like this was the start of something very special.
