Normal But Not: The Album Art

As part of the Hall's reflect series, Normal but Not is a selection of images by Storm Thorgerson Studios and Hipgnosis, highlighting the many iconic album covers which they have produced over the past five decades. On display will be a collection of old and new cover designs, reproduced as high-quality fine art prints – as big and bold as the music they seek to represent. Works shown include Muse, The Cranberries, Biffy Clyro, Pink Floyd, The Mars Volta, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Powderfinger, Black Sabbath, Peter Gabriel, Yes and many others.

Born in Potters Bar, Gateway to the East in 1944, Storm Thorgerson attended the Cambridge High School for Boys along with Pink Floyd members Roger Waters and Syd Barrett. He started the Hipgnosis design studio in 1968 with Aubrey Powell where he produced numerous album covers for rock 'n' roll bands. Along with Peter Christopherson they went on to direct adverts and videos as well as making television documentaries before Storm inaugurated StormStudios in the early '90s with Peter Curzon. This is where he still works with a changing affiliation of freelance designers and photographers producing still more album covers, posters, book jackets and T-shirts. He is also the author of several books on album cover art.

This exhibition takes place around the ground floor corridor of the Royal Albert Hall. You can view it when attending performances or by calling in on one of the following free open days:
