Eldorado Musical Productions (Amateur) is putting on “PICKWICK” a musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’s The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club better known as The Pickwick Papers.
This was the first novel by Charles Dickens written for publication as a serial between March and November 1836. After the introduction of the character Sam Weller in chapter 10 the book became a publishing phenomenon with bootleg copies, theatrical performances, Sam Weller joke books and other merchandise.
With extraordinary characters such as Augustus Hillary Snodgrass, Tracey Pyramus Tupman, Nethaniel Herbert Winkle, the comic villain Mr. Jingle and of course the kind and wealthy old gentleman Samuel Pickwick, the story develops from the activities of The Pickwick Club and its bachelor members and includes many uplifting, feel-good songs including the well known ‘If I Ruled the World’.
Originally presented at the Saville Theatre, London by Bernard Delfont and Tom Arnold in July 1963 with Sir Harry Secombe playing Pickwick and Roy Castle playing Sam Weller, it re-opened 30 years later with Sir Harry repeating his performance and Roy Castle playing Sam’s dad Tony Weller.
Eldorado’s show runs from Wednesday 8th October to Saturday 11th October 2008 at The Bob Hope Theatre, Wythfield Road, Eltham London SE9. Curtain up at 7.45 pm with a Saturday matinee at 2.45pm
